In a letter to the new President of Ukraine, Viktor Yushchenko Amnesty International urged him to make full use of his first Presidency to take concrete steps to improve human rights in Ukraine.

"The new administration has the opportunity to significantly improve the protection of human rights in Ukraine, including by bringing relevant legislation in line with the Constitution of the country as well as with international human rights law and standards," Irene Khan, Secretary General of Amnesty International said.

Member of Parliament Hryhoriy Omelchenko has requested that the Attorney General arrest Leonid Kuchma for his involvement with the murder of Heorhiy Gongadze, the beating of Oleksander El'iashkevych, the taking of bribes, the waste of state funds, and the misuse of his official position.

The session of the Presidium of the Progressive Socialistic Party of Ukraine is over, and N.Vitrenko (the leader of the PSPU) has decided: instead of giving to people the promiced generator of the miraculous energy, promised in her election campaign, the immediate beginning of the impeachment procedure for Viktor Yushchenko should be demanded from Verkhovna Rada.

Cargo for Transnistria delivered via Ukraine now must be covered by appropriate certification by the Moldova customs agency. Such orders were made by the State Customs Service of Ukraine recently. The order sets conditions for the export from Ukrainian territory of transit cargo intended for Transnistria with documentation drawn up by the Black Sea Regional Customs Office.

The publishing house “The stamp of Ukraine” has put on the market a new stamp, devoted to the events on Maidan (The Independende Square) and Viktor Yushchenko’s inauguration. On January 23, the special cancellation of this stamp took place in the big operational hall of the Central Post Office (the postmark with the text “The victory of the democracy… the first day”).

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko laid flowers at the monument to the young men who died at Kruty in on January 29, 1918. Afterwards, President Yushchenko participated in the blessing of the cornerstone at Askold's Tomb, where a memorial will soon be built to honor bravery and resistance - the Pantheon of Heroes.
