Approximately 8000 of Viktor Yanukovych's supporters are demonstrating on Lenin Square in Donetsk, where about 50 tents have been erected.

Yesterday evening, January 14, the Supreme Court accepted Yanukovych's complaint regarding the inactivity, actions and decisions of the Central Election Commission for consideration.

As reported by the Supreme Court press center, the court will begin its investigation on January 17 at 11 AM.

About 8000 people have assembled for the Donetsk demonstration, which organizers are calling “a protest in defense of the people's constitutional rights.” From a stage, the protest's MC declared that the daily demonstrations are organized by “the most powerful party that truly reflects the interests of our nation – The Party of Regions of Ukraine,” “Ostriv” (The Island) reports. Initially, the commencement of the rally was scheduled to start at 4:30 PM. Likewise, supporters of Natalia Vitrenko have been gathering at 5 PM at the same location for the last few days, also in support of Viktor Yanukovych.

At 4:30 PM, however, only members of the Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine (PSP) appeared before the crowd. The demonstration of the Party of Regions of Ukraine (PRU) only began at 5 PM. Members of the PRU were joined on stage by members of the PSP. Thus, the two demonstrations actually merged, which caused displeasure among some of Natalia Vitrenko’s female fans.

The leader of the Donetsk municipal organization of the PRU, Olexandr Bobkov, called the CEC decision “unconstitutional”. His reasoning is that “a free interpretation of the constitutional court decision (about the annulment of the regulation forbidding home voting) by the CEC is unconstitutional.” Bobkov said, “We consulted all our various territorial party representatives. Today we have 65 organizations in the Donetsk region representing 350,000 members of the PRU. We have consulted other cities: Dnipropetrovsk, Lviv, Kyiv, Odessa, Crimea, and we all agree that we do not recognize the CEC decision, as it is unconstitutional and violates the rights of our citizens, who should have been able to express their will at the polls.” For their part, members of the Communist party, also participating in the demonstrations, distributed their own fliers which state that “in the present situation, the Communist party is the only opposition to the new, so-called “pro-European - but in fact pro-American - development of the country among the major political parties in Ukraine.”

The demonstration continues.
