The head of a committee of State Duma of the Russian Federation, Konstantin Kosachov, maintains that Russia should assist in the unity of Ukrainian society after the official results of Ukrainian presidential elections are announced. (M.-I. comment: As if they didn't realize that we will manage our own unity.)
“More than anyone, Russia is interested Ukraine remaining a unified strong and unified state, so our country must act as a unifier of Ukrainian society - of course, in the event such support is requested.”
In response to journalists’ questions on whether Russia should try to “calm the anxiety” in the eastern regions of Ukraine, the MP said: “Certainly.”
“Moscow must recognize that the elections did take place and that they were legitimate, and it should congratulate the president-elect with his victory and do its best to establish a close cooperation with the new president,” the head of the Duma committee said. In his words, this stance is in line with the basic interests of both the Ukrainian and Russian nations.
RF State Duma Speaker Boris Grizlov made a similar, although more reserved, statement.
Russia will respect the choice of the Ukrainian people, who elected their president, Grizlov stated today to journalists.
“The choice has been made, and Russia will doubtlessly congratulate the winner of the political race after the inauguration, and all steps prescribed by diplomatic protocol will be made,” said the speaker.
Grizlov did not neglect to mention that, Russian observers noted a lot of irregularities during the re-run of the second round, however, the Ukrainian Central Election Commission considered them insufficient for making a corresponding decision.
