Yushchenko Priority: Withdrawal of Ukrainian Troops from Iraq

"Withdrawing Ukraine's peacekeeping contingent from Iraq remains one of Viktor Yushchenko's priorities once he takes the office," reported a statement released by his press office on January 10. Yushchenko also sent sincere condolences to the families of Ukrainian peacekeepers who died in Iraq.

Earlier today, seven Ukrainian troops died and another seven were injured after a bomb they were meant to defuse exploded in Iraq's Wasit region.

Prior to this tragic incident, Ukraine had lost nine troops, and 20 had been injured.

In December, the Ukrainian parliament approved a resolution demanding that Leonid Kuchma withdraw Ukrainian troops from Iraq, which he never did.
