25th Anniversary of Chornobyl Nuclear Disaster Commemorative

New York, New York – April 19- 30, 2011:

The Ukrainian Institute of America presents Chornobyl 25 – 10 days of art and music in commemoration of the 25th Anniversary of Chornobyl.

April 19 -The evening opens at 6pm with the Photo Exhibit “ After Chornobyl” by Fullbright Fellowship photojournalist Michael Forster Rothbart, and a Video Installation of Roman Hurko’s “Requiem : Panachyda for the Victims of Chornobyl”, with Projection Design by Jacques Collin.
The Gryphon Trio – winners of the 2011 Juno Awards will perform works of Beethoven, Haydn, Silvestrov, and Stankovych. in a closing commemorative concert, followed by reception.

April 29- Panel Discussion “Aspects of Chornobyl” with Moderator: Ambassador Valery Kuchinsky, Adjunct Professor Columbia University, and Former Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the United Nations. 7pm.

April 30 – Chornobyl Film Festival, “Chornobyl Heart” by Maryann de Leo, and other short films.

Pripyat, Ukraine -April 26th 1986, at 1:23 am, the worst nuclear disaster occurred at Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant during a systems test when Reactor 4 suffered a catastrophic power out surge, leading to explosions in its core. Burning for 10 days the large quantities of radioactive fuel and core materials released into the environment affected many countries, while over 116,000 people living in a 30km radius were evacuated and relocated. The village of Pripyat in the Exclusion Zone, is a deserted city with the haunting reminder of the tragic events of that day that to this day effect families and children in the surrounding areas of Ukraine.
