"Our names are Svitlana and Petro Klym. We live in L’viv - Western Ukraine. We have a daughter, Chrystyna. Chrystyna is our first, only and most desired child. She is 3 years and 10 months old, very smart, energetic, very friendly and communicative. She loves to play various logical games and puzzles, but she doesn’t talk. We could not find the reason for Chrystyna’s silence for a very long time as. Examination of her “delay in speech development” at the age of 1 year and 10 months and subsequent examinations, including speech therapy, provided no results. Finally, examinations of her apparent hearing impairment at the Otolaryngology Clinic of the Medical Academy in Warsaw diagnosed her deafness on October, 2005.
Looking back, Chrystyna’s birth was somewhat difficult due to umbilical cord entanglement, thus she was born through a Caesarian section. The umbilical cord entanglement caused hypoxia, thus she was given an injection of “gentamycin”, which today is known to case deafness in some children.
Today, Chrystyna’s only chance to hear and to live a normal life is to have a “cochlear implant”. As the optimal time for such implant is 3 years, and being nearly 4 years old, any delay will negatively influence the result. Thus, it is desirable for Chrystyna to undergo this implant as soon as possible to make it most effective.
The “cochlear implant” operation is very expensive, and especially expensive for us in Ukraine. This is why we are seeking financial assistance from carrying people anywhere we can find them. We have made arrangements with the Ukrainian Canadian Social Services in Toronto to assist us in raising the required funds.
